Pregnant women are told to avoid dying their hair, because the chemicals can harm the fetus. This is a well-known fact. If these chemicals are damaging enough to harm a fetus, it does not make me want to run out and slather gobs of hair dye all over my scalp.
Over the years, hair dyes have been linked to cancer, skin problems and arthritis. They aren't that great for the environment either.
There are plenty of green alternatives to the popular, store-bought, hair dyes. Many dyes can be made with items grown in your garden. Potato peels can be used to highlight gray hair, and rhubarb can be used to highlight blonde hair.
Rhubarb is a fairly strong dye that can create a more golden/honey-colored hue for the blonde-headed and the light-brown haired. You know rhubarb is safe, because you are able to eat it for sustenance. That's a pretty good indicator of safety.
Here's how to make the rhubarb hair dye:
From CareFair:
Take one cup of rhubarb bark and soak it in 2 cups of alcohol overnight. Strain the bark from the alcohol, and treat light hair with the solution to make it more blonde. Leave it in shampooed hair for 15 ? 20 minutes, then rinse and style as usual.
