Combine dry air, forced heat, wool hats, and coats and you've got a recipe for one of winter's worst side effects: static electricity in hair. If you've ever stocked your bag with dryer sheets before going out-or resorted to a ponytail to keep your locks from falling prey to dueling electrons—then it's time to try these easy, eco-friendly ways of taming your mane.
1. Use wood or natural bristle brushes, which won't hold a charge as easily as synthetics.
2. Keep your hair moisturized and conditioned so it's less likely to pick up static charges; Hairfinder.com recommends using a clarifying shampoo, like Avalon Organics Lemon with Shea Butter, once or twice a month while adding a deep conditioning treatment—try John Masters Organics Lavender and Avocado or make your own—every week.
3. Dab a small amount of natural lotion on your hands—or just use the extra that's left after you've rubbed in all you can—and pass your hands over your hair; the lotion will smooth frizz and help neutralize static.
