I don't know about you, but when I hear the word "organic," my mind first jumps to the thought of food, not clothing. But after reading the mission statement of Germany-based sustainable clothing company, Hessnatur, which tells me that, "2.4 billion tee shirts are being produced globally every year and that it takes about one third of a pound of pesticides and fertilizers to create one tee," I'm reminded that I should be just as committed to wearing chemical-free clothes as I am about eating all-natural foods.
The 30-year-old company, founded by European environmentalist, Heinz Hess, prides itself on not only its high quality clothing, but also their commitment to the quality of lives of those producing it. All of the clothing is made from 100% natural fibers, which are grown and cultivated without the use of any artificial fertilizers and pesticides. The company also works with the Fair Wear Foundation and Clean Clothes Campaign to maintain comprehensive social standards throughout the entire textile supply chain.
Luckily, wearing organic will become easier for us stateside when Hessnatur makes its U.S. debut this summer?just in time for their Fall/Winter collection. The classic and elegant line is designed by world-renowned Miguel Androver (known for using fashion as a medium for social messages) and features rich colors and fibers including: organic cotton, virgin wool, alpaca, mohair, cashmere, yak and organic silk. But the company doesn't only cater to fashion savvy grown-ups. They also offer a 100% organic baby collection that?s as adorable as it is healthy for baby's soft skin.
