Kathy

Forty-something Kathy is a hairstylist and the manager of a New York salon - not just any salon but the one owned by What Not To Wear's very own stylist Nick Arrojo. But Kathy's lack of style is making her stand out for all the wrong reasons. She wears her trousers too narrow at the ankle, and too high in the waist. Most of her sweaters are shapeless, baggy and black.

Stacy and Clinton have to persuade Kathy to choose clothes that will give her a modern, updated look and still be appropriate to her age. Kathy, however, hates shopping and has not been in a dressing room for more than 4 years. When it comes to her hair, Nick wants to get her away from being a bottle blonde and get her to have a style that's more fun. And make up artist Carmindy has to persuade Kathy that having dark circles under your eyes is not a reason to give up on eye make up.

Kathy's Rules and Mannequins

Mannequin #1 (Work; "Ambassador of the Salon" Look):

• Grey and red pin-stripe suit
• burgundy sweater tank with black heels

Rules:

• A 3-button suit jacket tailored to accent waist and a high stance gives a slimming shape.
• Wide-leg trouser should fit widest part of hip and fall gracefully to floor which will create a long, lean line.
• V-neck in bright color with a faux wrap will create a narrower looking waist.
• Bolder jewelry will stand out and balance her frame without being too bulky.

Mannequin #2 (Casual Work/After Work):

• Green leather jacket
• jeans
• ankle boots

Rules:

• Jeans with a crease make legs look longer and are more tailored than your average jean.
• A boot-cut jean is great for taller people because it will balance out the hips. Darker denim is also dressier.
• Short leather jacket that hits the top of hip will distinguish a body shape with a top and bottom half.
• A short heel or boot will balance out proportions as well.

Mannequin #3 (Evening):

• Missoni print skirt
• V-neck black blouse
• silver strappy heels

Rules:

• Structured tops accent the natural shape of her body and a faux wrap shows off her sexy neckline and narrows the ribcage. Roughing on sides creates ripples on the front which can camouflage anything that makes you uncomfortable.
• Wear skirts that flow away from the body to balance out your hip and thighs.
• A silver metallic strappy heel is always fashionable and complements the white in the skirt.

Hair Products:

• Wella Color Touch, equal parts 8/0, 7/7, 10/7
• KMS Texture Blast
• KMS Spray Paste

Hair Process:

1. Cut dry hair with scissors, great soft choppy layers approximately 2 inch length all over head with short choppy bangs. Refine with razor when wet.

2. Color with Wella Color Touch equal parts 8/0, 7/7, 10/7 with developer to create soft coffee brown color.

3. Dry with KMS Texture Blast for body. Use small brush and fingers. KMS Spray Paste for hold and manipulation.

1. Even out skin tone with Giorgio Armani Luminous silk foundation in #5.

2. Apply MAC blot powder in medium.

3. Fill in eyebrows.

4. Use NARS blush in Deep Throat to apples of cheekbone and temples.

5. Apply Vanilla Shadow by Sue Devitt in Dreamtime Legend under brow and on tear duct.

6. Apply Cargo eye shadow in Monte Carlo on lid and up to brow bone.

7. Apply MAC Stubborn brown eyeliner half way across lid (thicker on outside) and blended with Angle brush.

8. Apply Maybelline Giant Lash mascara in Blackest black to upper lashes only.

9. Lip liner by Guerlain in Beige Rose 82.

10. Cargo Lipstick in Portofino.

11. Khiel's Pearled Peach lip gloss.

12. Under eye concealer by Laura Mercier Camouflage Cream.
